Activation Modes

Your mic can be controlled automatically, or with a little help from you.

Voice Activity

AutoPTT will both press and release the Push-to-Talk key for you.

Tap

You start speaking by pressing the Push-to-Talk key but you can release the key immediately after; AutoPTT will keep Push-to-Talk active until you stop speaking.

Pust-to-Talk (PTT)

You press and release the Push-to-Talk key.

Multiple keys can be used to trigger PTT through Secondary PTT keys.

Open Mic to Tap

Similar to Tap, you press PTT to start talking, which unmutes your mic. It will stay unmuted as long as you talk, even if you release the PTT key immediately.

Open Mic to PTT

AutoPTT unmutes your mic when you press PTT and mutes it when you release PTT.

You can also make use of the following

Push-to-Mute

Press and hold a key to mute the mic. In Voice Activity and Tap modes, the PTT key is simply released, while in the Open Mic to PTT modes, the mic is muted system-wide.

Push-to-Mute (Global)

Press and hold a key to mute the mic system-wide regardless of the current Activation Mode, while also releasing the PTT key.

Toggle Mute (Global)

Use the Toggle Mute (Global) hotkey to mute/unmute the mic system-wide.

Detailed Settings

Settings missing from most games and apps are available in AutoPTT, and through AutoPTT, usable in all of them.

Activation Threshold

The sound level that needs to be passed before activating the mic.

Elsewhere, this might be referred to as the Sensitivity.

Deactivation Threshold

AKA Hold Threshold.

When the mic is already active, it is kept active as long as the sound level is above either the activation or deactivation thresholds.

This is useful if you have a tendency to start talking loudly and then trail off...

Release Delay

The mic is kept active for a time even after the sound level drops below the activation and deactivation thresholds.

This time period is reset every time the sound level goes back over either threshold.

Activation Window

Additionally, with the Tap modes, you can also make use of the Activation Window, which is the time that you have from releasing the PTT key to the mic becoming inactive without the sound level going over the activation threshold.

Basically, this is like Release Delay but for before you start speaking.

Voice Chat Support in Games

While you can expect most online multiplayer games to have built-in voice chat, you can’t rely on your chosen method of voice communication to be available.

Push-to-Talk is both easy for developers to implement and for players to set up and use. Just press the key, say what you want to say, and release the key. It’s no surprise it’s usually the default option.

However, for whatever reason, some developers opt for Open Mic. Maybe it’s the default – or only – option. Hopefully they’ve at least added a mic sensitivity slider so that it’s not literally always on. (This is often called Voice Activation.)

Push-to-Talk Is (Not) Necessary

For as long as we’ve had online multiplayer games, we’ve had voice chat.

Maybe the game didn’t have built-in voice chat, so people used Ventrilo, Teamspeak, Mumble, Skype, and others. Then Discord came around and became the one-stop shop for text and voice chat, but that’s not the point of this article.

For as long as we’ve had voice chat, we’ve also had heated debates on the pros and cons of Voice Activation and Push-to-Talk.

FakerInput at the Disco

The Razer Wolverine is a game controller that has extra buttons you can map to things like keyboard keys. Basically, the controller shows up as both a game controller and a keyboard, and any keyboard keys mapped to the extra buttons are treated as real, physical keyboard keys.

If you’ve read the previous post on FakerInput, this might sound familiar.

Anyway, a user with said controller had been having some issues using it with AutoPTT, and as mostly a debugging measure, I was working on adding a way to show the status of all active keyboard and mouse keys into the Overview tab of AutoPTT (in AutoPTT 4.4.0, this is a feature you can enable from the General settings).

It was recently brought to my attention that Battlefield 6 suffers from occasional dips in performance, and it has to do with how the game’s anti-cheat deals with keyboards. This Reddit post has the details.

Basically, holding down the ALT key gets rid of the performance problems, and people have taken to taping the key down to fix it.

AutoPTT 4.0.0 was recently released with support for FakerInput, a driver that shows up as a keyboard and mouse that can be controlled by software.

Being able to simulate input has always been core to AutoPTT (after all, the name comes from Automatic Push-to-Talk) so it made sense to ensure maximum compatibility with games and apps, and FakerInput helps with that goal.

I ended up spending most of the holidays working on an alternative solution to some games ignoring input generated by AutoPTT. Previously, the solution was the AutoPTT Sidekick, but it required you to buy a specific piece of hardware and flash it yourself, so it was not exactly something the average person might use.

Now, with AutoPTT 4.0.0, you can use the FakerInput driver to solve the same problem. It does not require any hardware; it’s just a driver. It’s used in the popular DS4-Windows app, so if you’re an avid gamer, you might already have heard of it.

I had never even heard of it. I looked it up, and had to regrettably inform them that creating a plugin for a discontinued device with limited software support was not exactly high on the priority list.

The 3.0.0 release of AutoPTT comes with another feature requested by multiple users: Profiles.

Now you can have multiple profiles that can be associated with different programs and have them automatically activate when these programs are running.

This is a big internal change so there’s definitely a chance for some bugs, so please let me know if you see any!

The development of this feature was documented on the Roadmap.

AutoPTT 2.11.0 is now out, and it comes with a new feature suggested by a user: Toggle Mute for individual PTT keys. It works just like Push-to-Mute for individual PTT keys already does, but as a toggle.

Previously, the only Toggle Mute AutoPTT offered was the Toggle Mute (Global) hotkey, which would mute the selected device system-wide. Which was okay when you were using either the Open Mic to PTT or Open Mic to Tap activation modes, but could have been less than ideal for the other modes that operated by pressing and releasing a key.

How to: Push-to-Talk, Push-to-Mute and Toggle Mute in Microsoft Teams

Whether you like it or not, Microsoft Teams is a widely used product and many use it for online meetings. Despite being a big product from a big company, the customization options it offers with regards to voice communication are severely lacking.

The default in Teams is Open Mic with a global keybind for toggle mute, CTRL-SHIFT-M, which you can’t change. It also has temporary unmute (ie. Push-to-Talk) bound to CTRL-SPACE, but it only works when the window is active (and not while you’re typing in the chat box).

How to: Push-to-Mute

Method 1 (via Push-to-Talk)

If your game/app supports Push-to-Talk, you can get a Push-to-Mute by letting AutoPTT press the Push-to-Talk key for you.

Instructions:

Click on Audio in the left side menu
Set Activation Mode to Voice Activity
Adjust Activation Threshold by dragging the little triangle under it so that the bar goes into the green when you speak
Click on Hotkeys in the left side menu
Add a hotkey for Push-to-Talk 1 (AutoPTT will press/release this key)
Add a hotkey for Push-to-Mute (Push-to-Talk 1)

Method 2 (via Open Mic / Voice Activation)

If your game/app does not support Push-to-Talk, you’ll have to instead mute and unmute the mic system-wide.

How to: Toggle Mute

Method 1: Use the Toggle Mute (Global) hotkey

The most common use case for a Toggle Mute (or Push-to-Mute) is to mute the mic system wide, so AutoPTT provides a Toggle Mute (Global) hotkey to do just that. You can also enable a sound effect for when the hotkey is pressed and the mute state changes.

This method requires the Activation Mode to be set to either Voice Activity, Tap or Push-to-Talk.

This is kind of a big release with mostly UI changes but it does also include quite a few changes under the hood, mainly related to keybinds.

After updating, check the “Hotkeys” section and make sure your keybinds are still there.

If any keybinds are missing though, I would ask that you go into your AutoPTT installation directory and find the latest AutoPTT.settings.bin.<number>.bak and send it to me so I can look at what went wrong.

To detect voice activity, AutoPTT listens to your microphone. It only cares about the sound levels; it does absolutely nothing with the actual audio content. It’s not recorded or sent anywhere.

AutoPTT only uses the Internet for:

verifying licenses
checking for updates
downloading and installing updates

To press and/or release the push-to-talk key, AutoPTT creates fake keyboard input events (with SendInput). These work just like real keyboard events except that Windows flags them as having been programmatically generated. This means that there is a very small chance that AutoPTT doesn’t work in a game without a workaround (see “Games that require physical input” on the Troubleshooting page).

AutoPTT isn’t pressing my PTT key

If you’re using AutoPTT with games/apps that are running as admin, then AutoPTT needs to be run as admin, as well.

It’s also worth noting that if you’re running a game as admin and AutoPTT as admin while using AutoPTT to speak through another app like Discord, then (currently) that app also needs to be run as admin. (There might be a way to fix this part in AutoPTT; I need to look into it.)

This is a short guide on how to use AutoPTT to get voice-activated priority speaker on Discord, which currently requires Push-to-Talk.

A few things to note, beforehand:

Priority Speaker only works when INPUT MODE in Discord is set to Push-to-Talk.
By default, only server admins are allowed to use Priority Speaker. So if you want to use it on a server you don’t own, you’ll need to ask an admin to grant you permission.
If Discord is running as admin, AutoPTT also needs to be run as admin.

Features

Activation Modes
- Voice Activity: The app will both press and release the Push-to-Talk key for you.
- Tap: You start speaking by pressing the Push-to-Talk key but you can release the key immediately after; the app will keep Push-to-Talk active until you stop speaking.
- Manual: Does nothing. Will still play sound effects for you though if you want a confirmation for when you’ve pressed or released the Push-to-Talk key.
- Open Mic to PTT - Tap: Similar to Tap, you press PTT to start talking, which unmutes your mic. It will stay unmuted as long as you talk, even if you release the PTT key immediately.
- Open Mic to PTT - Manual: Press PTT to unmute, release to mute.
Hotkeys
- Push-to-Mute
- Change to a specific Activation Mode
- Cycle between Activation Modes (for example, cycling between Voice Activation and Manual basically gets you a “toggle mute”)
- Extra Activation Keys (for use with soundboard apps and Tap mode)
- Xbox and Playstation controller support (guide)
Play sound when…
- Push-to-Talk has been pressed or released (by you, or by AutoPTT)
- Push-to-Mute has been pressed or released
- Activation Mode has been changed
Release Delay: Keep the mic active for a time even after the sound level drops below the activation and deactivation threshold.
Safe (aka Paranoid) mode: Make sure that the PTT key doesn’t get stuck in an active state, which can happen on some systems when running programs with elevated privileges.
