What is Push-to-Talk?

Push-to-Talk (often abbreviated PTT) is a voice mode where your microphone stays muted until you hold down a key. Your voice is only transmitted while the key is held. Release the key, and the mic closes again.

Most modern online games and some meeting apps let you choose between three voice modes:

  • Push-to-Talk: you hold a key to talk
  • Voice Activation (also called Voice Activity): your mic opens automatically when it hears you speak, and closes when you stop
  • Open Mic (also called Continuous): your mic is always on

Push-to-Talk vs Voice Activation vs Open Mic

Push-to-Talk gives you full control and keeps background noise out, but you have to remember to hold the key every time you speak. In fast-paced games, forgetting to press the key (or releasing it too early) is a common source of frustration.

Voice Activation is hands-free: you just talk. The downside is that it can trigger on background noise like your keyboard, a notification sound, or someone nearby talking, which is why it feels “unreliable” in many games, and can be disruptive to others.

If you’re lucky, the app or game lets you adjust the mic sensitivity (ie. how easily it triggers) yourself.

Open Mic is the simplest: everything you and your surroundings produce gets sent to your team. Fine in a quiet room, a recipe for chaos otherwise.

It’s worth noting that some apps or games may offer mic sensitivity settings with Open Mic, in which case they’re using the term wrong. Because in that case it’s Voice Activation.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. It depends on the game, the meeting, and the person. Ideally, you should be able to switch modes freely, and use the one you’re most comfortable with.

Why Push-to-Talk is so common in games

In competitive games, voice chat happens in the middle of action. Developers default to Push-to-Talk because it guarantees that a loud explosion or a noisy neighbor won’t be broadcast to the whole team. Many games don’t offer Voice Activation at all, and the ones that do often make you sacrifice other features to use it.
